Ethics in Modeling

About the course

With the rise of AI all around us, new questions and challenges constantly arise. How fair or biased is AI? How can we ensure it is being used ethically? Ethics is rarely conclusive; there are always pros and cons. Therefore, being educated and able to position yourself in a debate is key. This one-day course will provide you with a thorough understanding of the importance of ethics in AI through real-life examples of the consequences of unethical practice. We will approach ethics from a range of perspectives: from contemporary philosophers to the guidelines by Google, discussing privacy, transparency, bias, fairness, and responsibility. This training will follow accessible and real case studies to translate ethical terminology into business examples. Along with hands-on activities where participants identify and mitigate risks in every step of model creation. Finally, we end with a debate in House of Commons style, where participants must argue for or against a divisive case. Significant time is spent equipping you with the skills to recognize the difference between ethics and bias, checking and correcting for bias in AI applications, and forming critical thought on ethically applying AI.

Why this is for you

Ethics in AI is not only the concern of philosophers but also of the AI business practitioners and AI experts. Over the past years, and especially since the introduction of the GDPR, there is a growing awareness of using AI ethically. Many companies have incurred PR damage due to unethical or biased applications, often unintentionally. Hence, when implementing AI in your business, it is key to first understand the impact unethical models can have on your customers, your employees or your company’s PR image. Furthermore, we all want to do good in this world, so we also have an intrinsic incentive to ensure we apply AI in an ethical way. After this course, you will confidently be able to identify the ethical risk of AI within your job and business as a whole and be equipped with the tools to avoid these risks in the development of models.
